As a Firewise lead in a volunteer role, I look for inspiration from those who are engaged, passionate and who are leading by example. I feel that Joe Smailes is one of those Plumas County citizens who deserves recognition for his Firewise leadership and advocacy for post fire line cleanup, but more importantly for his encouragement to Firewise leads. He suggests that we use our voices to express concerns, to collaborate and to advocate for projects that can benefit our communities.I find Joe's delivery to be professional and passionate as he sends empowering messages of encouragement. Through his example I have expanded my reach to surrounding neighbors to collaborate on future fuels reduction efforts to create and maintain fuels breaks through community volunteer work days and with potential grant opportunities. My nomination of Joe is proof that people who “do“ and “encourage” are successful in inspiring others to do the same. Many thanks to Joe Smailes for leading by example!
