Senior Disabled
Defensible Space Assistance

A landscaped yard featuring a new tree, rocks, and a curved walkway next to a house, with chairs visible in the background.

For more than 20 years, the Senior Disabled Defensible Space Assistance Program has supported Plumas County residents who are 65 years of age or older or living with a disability. The program was designed to assist those who may face physical and financial challenges in maintaining defensible space around their homes — an critical step in reducing wildfire risk and protecting our communities.

This work has always been about more than vegetation removal. It has been about educating, supporting, strengthening community safety, and ensuring our most vulnerable residents are not left behind in wildfire preparedness efforts.

Current Program Status:
At this time, funding is no longer available to provide direct, hands-on defensible space services through this program. We know this program has made a meaningful difference for many households across Plumas County, and we understand that this change may create concern or uncertainty.
Our Commitment Continues:
Although we are unable to provide on-the-ground defensible space treatments right now, the Plumas County Fire Safe Council remains fully committed to supporting residents in every way we can.  Please know that this pause does not reflect a shift in our commitment — only a change in available funding, which we continue to actively pursue.

We will continue to offer:

  • No-cost Fire Safe Home Visits - Use the yellow link below to schedule one.
  • Home Ignition Zone education and compliance guidance under California’s Defensible Space Law (Public Resources Code §4291).  Including new Zone-0 requirements.
  • Wildfire preparedness education and technical assistance
  • Information about local service providers when available - Use green link below to access provider list
  • Updates on future funding opportunities

If funding becomes available again, priority will continue to focus on primary residences and households with moderate or below-moderate incomes.

Working Together for Community Safety:
Wildfire resilience has always been a shared effort. While grant funding has fluctuated, our dedication to helping Plumas County prepare, adapt, and stay safe remains steady.

We are actively pursuing new funding sources and will continue advocating for resources that support seniors, individuals living with disabilities, and underserved residents. In the meantime, our team is here to answer questions, provide guidance, and help you take practical steps toward improving defensible space at your property.

We deeply value the trust our community has placed in us over the years. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued partnership as we work together to protect our homes, our neighbors, and the place we all call home.
