SB 973 Advances in Legislature

California's proposed Wildfire County Coordinator Program (SB 973) continues to move through the legislative process.

On May 26, SB 973 passed out of the California Senate and was introduced in the Assembly. The bill has been referred to both the Assembly Natural Resources & Water Committee and the Assembly Emergency Management Committee for consideration.

If approved, SB 973 would establish the Wildfire County Coordinator Program, helping support local coordination, partnership development, and implementation of community wildfire resilience efforts throughout California.

This legislation is particularly relevant to Plumas County. The Plumas Fire Safe administers the County Coordinator position through funding provided by the California Fire Safe Council (CFSC) & CAL FIRE. The position serves as a local connector, bringing together agencies, Firewise Communities, community organizations, landowners, and other partners to support wildfire preparedness, planning, education, grant implementation, and collaborative resilience efforts across the county.

SB 973 represents an opportunity to establish a more consistent, long-term statewide framework for supporting this work and recognizing the value County Coordinators provide in building wildfire-resilient communities.

We'll continue to share updates as the bill moves through the legislative process.
