Plumas County Cal-TREX
Prescribed Fire Training Exchange
Quincy, CA
Registration closes March 4th, 2022
Target Group: The event is open to individuals with a current Red Card (or equivalent qualifications) who are interested in learning and sharing their knowledge of prescribed fire. The event will be focused on local capacity building.
Description:
The Plumas Cal-TREX training includes three primary components:
1) Pre-fire training March 26-27. This weekend will focus on hands-on learning opportunities and developing crew cohesion. Exercises will incorporate equipment utilization, weather and fuel observations, fireline leadership skills, and information about local fire ecology and fire management. *If this weekend falls during a burn window there will be potential to utilize live fire.* (Participation capped at 60)
2) Burn Plan Preparation workshop April 9-10. This weekend will provide thorough field-based instruction on the development of a burn plan utilizing the California Standardized Prescribed Fire form. *If this weekend falls during a burn window, live fire training will be the priority and the workshop will be scheduled for an alternative date.* (Participation capped at 30)
3) After the scheduled training weekends, participants will be on call for prescribed fire training opportunities as burn windows become available throughout the spring. (No cap on participation)
Participants are highly encouraged, but not required, to attend the initial training weekend(s). This registration form is required for participation in any or all of the training options.
All components of the training will be organized as an incident and will utilize the Incident Command System. Participants will serve on a burn team and will assist with preparing, scouting, briefing, igniting, holding, fire effects monitoring, mop-up, and patrol on prescribed burns throughout Plumas County. The work will take place in diverse ecosystems, including on lands managed by the Plumas National Forest and on private lands.
Dates: March 25-27th, April 8-10, and on call throughout the spring burn season
Requirements:
• All participants must be red card current and qualified, or have completed NWCG courses ICS-100, S-130, S-190, L-180 and FEMA course IS-700. A work capacity test and a practice shelter deployment will be offered prior to the event to those who need it.
• All participants must have insurance (e.g., workers’ comp or health) to cover any injury they may sustain during the training exchange.
• Participants should come with all appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including fireline-approved boots (all leather work boots, 8-inches tall, non-slip soles, no steel toe), a new generation fire shelter, headlamp, hard hat, Nomex clothing, leather gloves, eye protection, and canteens for drinking water. If you do not have full PPE, we can arrange for you to borrow some. Please indicate your need when you register for the event.
