Plumas County Cal-TREX
Prescribed Fire Training Exchange
Quincy, CA
Target Group: Due to Covid-19, we are only seeking local participation, and the event will be focused on local capacity building. The event is open to individuals interested in learning and sharing their knowledge of prescribed fire.
Description: The training will be organized as an incident and will utilize the Incident Command System. Participants will serve on a burn team and will assist with preparing, scouting, briefing, igniting, holding, fire effects monitoring, mop-up, and patrol on numerous controlled burns in the area. We will also train with equipment, practice fireline leadership skills, and learn about local fire ecology and fire management. The work will take place in diverse ecosystems, including on lands managed by the Plumas National Forest, and on private lands. If we are not able to burn on any of the scheduled weekends, the event will still occur, and training may include trips to prescribed fire and fuels treatment project sites, presentations from local ecologists and land managers, hands-on fire engine and water handling training, and fire weather, fuels, and fire effects training.
Dates: This event will target weekends in late-October through mid-November. The weekends include: October 24-25th, October 31st-November 1st, November 7th-8th, November 14th-15th, and November 21st-22nd.
Requirements:
• All participants must be red card current and qualified, or have completed NWCG courses ICS-100, S-130, S-190, L-180 and FEMA course IS-700. A work capacity test and a practice shelter deployment will be offered prior to the event to those who need it.
• All participants must have insurance (e.g., workers’ comp or health) to cover any injury they may sustain during the training exchange.
• Participants should come with all appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including fireline-approved boots (all leather work boots, 8-inches tall, non-slip soles, no steel toe), a new generation fire shelter, headlamp, hard hat, Nomex clothing, leather gloves, eye protection, and canteens for drinking water. If you do not have full PPE, we can arrange for you to borrow some. Please indicate your need when you register for the event.
Logistics: Due to Covid-19, meals will not be provided. Camping will be made available. All participants are expected to be self-sufficient for a 48 hour period. The most up-to-date Covid-19 safety protocols will be adhered to, including but not limited to mask wearing, social distancing, and frequent hand washing.
