Descriptions of Crown Fire:

· Active - Fire spreading through the crowns in which the entire fuel complex becomes involved, but the crowning phase remains dependent on heat from the surface fuels for continued spread.
· Passive - crown fire in which individual or small groups of trees torch out, but solid flaming in the canopy cannot be maintained except for short periods. Passive crown fire encompasses a wide range of crown fire behavior from occasional torching to a nearly active crown fire.
